I personally tend to favour SSuite Office’s free office suites. Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

Sara- Thank you so much for the GIMP suggestion. I've been thinking how helpful Photoshop would be but wasn't about to pay so much for it.

We haven't bought proprietary software in YEARS! My husband writes open source software--we don't even run Windows here, all Linux. Open Office was my best friend all through college.
You should check out GIMP. It's an open source photo editing program. WAY cheaper than Photoshop...you know, because it's free. :)

OO indeed is a very handy and AFFORDABLE (imagine it's free!) tool for people like us who believe in saving every $ for rainy days. GO, OOo!

We are Open Office users here too! We love it, and have absolutely no problems using it. We learned about it from reading The Simple Dollar.

Thanks for this info Dana! I am curious if this works with Mac too. I will have to look into it. I just bought a Mac laptop and need the MS office software for it. However, I was not about to pay the premium price!

I wholeheartedly agree, I've been using open office at home for about a year now and love it. I can open any office file that other people send me, and best of all I can create new files and send them our in Word or Excel, so that I know others will be able to use them. If your company doesn't purchase MS Office for you, save your money and go with Open Office.
