I absolutely loved reading each and every one of your comments on the magazine subscription giveaway. I love to learn more about you, my lovely readers! Especially like hearing your “stories”. And it makes me feel like real people are actually reading. :) Not to mention, y’all were incredibly encouraging in your comments. Thank you!
The winner of the giveaway receives her choice of a subscription from the following magazines: Southern Living (2 years), Coastal Living (2 years), Southern Accents (2 years), Cooking Light (2 years), All You (1 year), Sunset (1 year), Health (2 years), Real Simple (1 year), or In Style (1 year). I selected a winner at random and the winning comment is:
#44- Adrienne
(If you have credit card debt, you really must go back and read her comment on the original post. I think you’ll find it encouraging. She and her husband got out of credit card debt. You can too!)
Now, since you guys were so wonderful to share a bit about you, I thought I would share a bit about me. My husband can’t belive I’m going to do such a “vanity post”. But I feel like it doing it because A) It’s only fair since you told me about yourselves. B) I want to throw in something a little different than the usual deals I post. C) I’m hoping maybe we can find some other things in common other than the desire to cut costs! C’mon, there’s more to life than saving money.
But if you hate these kind of getting-to-know you posts like my husband does, just ignore the following list!
25 Random Facts About Me
1. I went to CVS the other day, spent all of my ECBs and didn’t get a single one in return. Yikes! Yes, I’m embarrassed to admit this. Chalk it up to expiring ECBs, a screaming baby, empty shelves, and a few things we just needed.
2. We don’t have any pets, and if it were totally up to me, we never would. I’m not much of an animal person. Call me cold-hearted if you will…
3. Actually, I don’t like pets to the point that I never walk down the pet food aisle in stores. The smell just grosses me out.
4. After my husband and I got married, we lived in a tiny apartment in Ontario, Canada for a year while my husband finished school. I worked in Buffalo, NY and commuted across the border each day. As much hassle and driving as it was, I kind of liked the minor adventure of the border crossing (and major snow!) each day.
5. I’m a graduate of Liberty University. (Jerry Falwell’s school). You may have heard rumors about the school, and while a couple of them may be true, I absolutely loved my time there. My college choices were narrowed to the University of Virginia and Liberty, and I’m so happy I made the decision I did.

6. I have volunteered on and off as a counselor at a crisis pregnancy center since my senior year of high school.
7. I really enjoy baking but am not so into cooking. I bake for fun. I cook meals because I need to.
8. Really, I’m not so into cleaning either. While my house isn’t gross, I have trouble keeping it as clean as I should.
9. My husband and I help with the high school youth group at our church. And we have a wonderful group of students.
10. Favorite movie of all time: Mary Poppins. Hands down. It’s been my favorite for the past twenty years.
11. I’m very much a Type A personality. Classic case of it. Grinding teeth and all. Okay, now I’m really just embarrassing myself with this list.
12. I have a constant sweet-tooth. Really, it’s a problem. I’m eating Smarties as I type.
13. I’m a sucker for romantic comedies.
14. I have a love-hate relationship with Twitter.
15. I saw U2 in concert last week. My second favorite concert I’ve been to. My favorite: Derek Webb.
16. Sometimes I feel quite a bit older than I actually am. I can’t decide if that’s good or bad.
17. I can’t decide if The Office or The Cosby Show is my favorite TV show ever. Maybe it’s a tie.
18. I love Relevant Magazine. It’s the only magazine subscription I actually pay for. So cool. The articles, the design. You must check it out.
19. Favorite book of all time (I think), other than the Bible: The Ragamuffin Gospel. I also like Little Women.
20. I dress in a pretty classic (or boring?) style. I plan to change this. But darn it, sometimes I feel like the new styles look flat out ridiculous.
21. I love to dress up. Absolutely love it. A nice black dress with heels and a pearl necklace: my favorite thing to wear!
22. I’m not very athletic. Actually, I do want to start exercising, but I’m having trouble making time for it. And that’s not an excuse. Just a fact.
23. I miss my closest girl friends dearly. And I don’t call them as often as I should.
24. I grew up in the country and now live there again, but I think I’m a bit of a suburb girl at heart. (I’m tired of driving 45 minutes to get to a Target!)
25. Last but not least, I’m married to my high school sweetheart. Actually, we met when he moved here from Canada in the 7th grade. We were in the same homeroom. We both had crushes on one another the next year. And it the rest is history…

You’re not cold hearted. I don’t like pets either. In fact, that was one of the things that attracted me to my husband–neither one of us ever wants one or will have one. Cleaning litter boxes and scooping poop from the yard is not for us. Nor do we want the expense that comes with them.
Heck, I don’t even want a goldfish!!!!
You sound like a real Southern gal !
so interesting! :-) i have a horrible sweet tooth, too, and used to volunteer as a receptionist at a crisis pregnancy center….we support them financially now since i don’t in person. :-)
Re: 20 — Stick with “classic” it just sounds more timeless. And I agree a hundred times with you about fashion nowadays. I saw a girl at the mall the other day wearing the exact outfit that I wore to a dance in eighth grade – legwarmers and all!
LOL
2. We don’t have any pets, and if it were totally up to me, we never would. I’m not much of an animal person. Call me cold-hearted if you will…
Um.. heartless may be me… I don’t want a pet. Yet we have not one but 2 dogs (okay one is mine but he is wonderful- my husbands purebred beagle is a terror & destruction machine) and now we somehow ended up with a fish- when all I went to the pet store for was flea & tick medicine! I’d get rid of them but doing that seems so… awful.
Yet it if they died, I wouldn’t be too sad.
See. Me= heartless. But just when it comes to destructive or pointless pets. My dog I like just fine ; )
I didn’t realize you were a Liberty grad too! I graduated in 2006. When did you graduate? And by the way, we don’t have any pets either, and I plan to keep it that way. I like animals just fine, but I don’t want to clean up after them, pay vet bills, etc., etc.!

I am so glad to hear I’m not the only one not crazy about pets. My husband acts like it’s a crime. Thankfully he doesn’t want a pet right now because of the extra time one would require.
Tara- Yep, I’m an LU grad. I graduated in ’06 too! What did you study?
Dana,
I just found your blog
Dana,
Oops, I meant to write more, but it’s 2AM and I am holding my 11-week old who got shots today and I accidentally hit “enter.” :-(
Anyway, I just found your blog through a blog my friends do about saving money here in the valley (Making Cents out of Coupons). I just wanted to say that I, too, don’t care for pets and never want to own one! We have 2 boys (the oldest is 2), so my husband says “every boy needs a dog.” Haha! And also I have volunteered off and on since 2000 at my local pregnancy center as a counselor. What an amazing, yet challenging, experience! (I was “blessed” to always get those really tough ones.)
Thank you for your blog and tips on saving money! I lost my job at Wells Fargo while on maternity leave in 2007 and my husband works at a private, Christian school, so money is extremely tight. I do a little daycare and bookkeeping to help out. I’d do whatever I had to to stay home full-time with our boys and I love it!
Sorry this was so long. Have a great day!
Blessings,
Brittany
Dana- I studied elementary ed. Were you on campus?
.-= Tara´s last blog ..Showdown with Kroger =-.
Tara- Yes, I was on campus my whole 3 years there- dorm 13. Were you on campus?
Yep, I was in dorm 27 my first two years, and dorm 30 my last two years. My husband was in dorm 12, right next to you! We probably crossed paths at some point, in passing at least I would think! :)

I am even more stoked to use your site now that I know you’re an LU grad!!! Gotta support my fellow alumni!
Love your blog and your list. Gave me a much needed chuckle. Glad to know I’m not the only “non-pet” person out there. My hubby and I are also high school sweet-hearts, and that is pretty cool to hear you didn’t mind your commute to Buffalo as I was born and raised in Buffalo and now raise my family here!
