My wife hates coupons. I adore them. I buy them by the bunchful on eBay and just wait a week or 2 for the product to go on sale and then buy in bulk for usually 1/2 price ... it's an old trick at this point, but I've been doing it for almost 8 years now and have saved hundreds, if not a few thousand $ at this point. The trick is only to focus on the products you actually know you're going to use ...

I had an unsupportive husband in the beginning of my frugal days, too. But now, he's my equal (or better) at saving money and finding deals. I like tip #1 and #3 -- that's what worked. I bought thing he liked and then I got him involved in the process. Now, he's the one encouraging me.

I just wanted to share a post I recently wrote in which I explained how my hubby deals with my extreme couponing and constant monitoring/involvement in the frugal blog-o-sphere! It's kind of funny, but hey, we're a kooky family!
Thanks again for Ryan's interesting and often funny posts about extreme couponing and deal-seeking from the perspective of the husband of a "frugal".

Dear Ryan,

I just love your posts! You crack me up with your hilarious observations of *the Frugals* with our treasure trove of glossy money paper and ricey goodness! I felt a little upset about your co-workers and their bet on the ziplocks...the truth is is that some folks just don't get it. I remember the days when I thought it was a *splurge* to buy luxury body washes, brand name detergents and those $5.00 boxes of cereal. Now I have a house BRIMMING with all those items. I spend about $50.00 a week for food and HBA items vs. the $150.00 weekly that I would spend at my local supercenter- and that was considered a *good* week. Being frugal is not about speeding across town to save 3 cents on a can of peas- it's about quality, quantity, and saving money for the things that are truely important to your family.

For those of you who have resistant husbands, I would start with trying to understand where he is coming from. Alot of guys have never had to experience how hard it is to *stay inside the lines* of a grocery budget... because usually it's US who's doing the shopping...therefore they do not really understand the value of couponing. But they will! Believe me, my hubby NOTICES an extra $400.00+ in our bank account every month!

I know it's difficult, but try to keep your excitement down to a dull roar. For whatever reason, they will not share your excitement about getting that $5.00 box of cereal for 50 cents-YET. It will come when the house starts filling up along with your bank account! I think at first it may seem *cheap* to them that you are stoked because you saved $1.50 on a jar of pasta sauce. Again, they haven't seen the overall picture yet.

As someone else so wisely put it- keep him out of the store with you for now. We have all been there- the cashier that acts like you are a huge pain for using coupons, the call to a manager for approval, the sighing customers behind you in line (before they hear your total..then they change their tune!) You don't want him to see this side of things. It will only add to the *cheap/bad provider* factor.

Other than that, concentrate on quality and quantity. I think at first my hubby thought this was some kind of goofy whim I went off on, but since I was saving a little cash he didn't say too much about it. I started coming home overjoyed about my little grocery/drug store victories and he looked at me like I was crazy! After a few months of couponing, instead of asking me how much I spent, he started asking "How much did you save?" :)

Now, after a year of couponing, he runs out to grab the Sunday papers for me and he gets really tickled hearing about all my upcoming deals- he even enjoys going through the CVS flier himself to spot all the good deals! And much to my surprise, recently he was talking about my savings to a bunch of guys he works with and took in a grocery receipt to proove it the following day- Now it's me giving him ODD looks! LOL...

Ryan,
Thanks for the fun post on how to get the hubbies involved and/or supportive of couponing and money-saving. My husband is supportive, but it is funny how we think very differently and how he originally was the "impulsive" buyer/spender and now my couponing and deal-searching has rubbed off on him a little bit.

Ha I love your banter. My Hubby Mike wasn't into it at all either. He puts that right into a shopping trip to buy clothes. After my stockpile was adding up he "needed" to build me another Pantry. This made him feel useful and he started getting into the couponing. He loved the samples I was getting so he could take them on his business trips. lol

I have been couponing hard for almost 2 years and we save a ton. Now he tells the people behind me in line at the checkout counter that if they don;t want to wait then go to another line. He was so upset at one couple for taking about me out loud at a checkout line. Then he announced to them when we paid $12.50 for $150 worth of groceries. The lady wanted to know how I got all them coupons. lol

Mike now goes to the store and with a list he will use coupons if I lay them out (didn't used to) He now will even go through my coupon book if there is something he needs at the store.

Saving money is awesome and No we don't reuse Ziplock bags either. Why should we?

Any tip that visually shows a man what he is saving despite the irksome cashier and coupon problems will usually convert anyone in no time at all--particularly when following this website or another one much like it.

We started out with another site and, thank goodness!, found our way here to Dana's site. The other site saved us some money, but not nearly as much as this one.

My husband had grumbled about the long shopping trips (he always had to be begged and bargained with to come along) but armed with one list from this website and coupons he was completely hooked after $97 worth of groceries came down to less than $10 at the register.

After that, he was the one asking ME to go shopping!

I have to say, I find your "husband" posts to be so hilariously true! My husband identifies with a lot of what you say too. After a trip that I feel particularly good about, I sometimes try to play the "guess how much I paid" game. He used to get almost as much enjoyment out of that game as I do, but now he's rather bored by the fact that I paid $.82 for 6 bottles of juice, 4 boxes of spaghetti, a sack of potatoes, and a package of chicken. He rarely comes shopping with me, and if he does, I usually regret it at some point because of requests to get things that are not on my list. However, I have found that when he's ready, it can be good for him to come with, mostly because it lets him see exactly what you do. The last time he came with me, I got a couple hundred dollars worth of groceries for around $4. Even he was impressed then. So, it can be worth it to let him witness firsthand the power of the coupon!

He used to get almost as much enjoyment out of that game as I do, but now he’s rather bored by the fact that I paid $.82 for 6 bottles of juice, 4 boxes of spaghetti, a sack of potatoes, and a package of chicken. He rarely comes shopping with me, and if he does, I usually regret it at some point because of requests to get things that are not on my list. However, I have found that when he’s ready, it can be good for him to come with, mostly because it lets him see exactly what you do. The last time he came with me, I got a couple hundred dollars worth of groceries for around $4. Even he was impressed then. So, it can be worth it to let him witness firsthand the power of the coupon!

All I can say is - this is hilariously true! I just read this to my hubby and we are both dying laughing. Mostly because I can totally relate to the invading of the hygiene products...we have a bin under our bed that is completely FULL of Fusion razors. Thanks for you comedic approach to the crazy coupon lady :) and yes it's completely okay to be crazy :)

[...] Sometimes it’s tough when the people in your family don’t support your couponing habits. If you need to convince a significant other, Ryan (husband of a very frugal lady) has a few suggestions here. [...]

At first, the other half though it was a "whim" and while he didn't have a problem with it, he would laugh at me. That was until he walked into the pantry one day, and saw how much food was in there. His first question was, how much have you been spending on groceries lately, thinking I had been spending more money on groceries. When I told him I was using the same budgeted amount as I always had, yet using coupons, this allowed me to purchase close to three times the groceries as I use to.

He's turned into the coupon holder when we go to the store, and gave himself the name "coupon boy".

Here are two ideas for those who have "anti-coupon" significant others.

1. Stick to your budget, don't take him to the store with you, continue to use coupons, and let the food stockpile. They will believe it when you see it. You don't spend any extra money, but you do gain extra food.

2. Don't take him to the store with you, continue to use coupons, but the money left over from your budget, save. Then at the end of the month, show him, in cold hard cash. You don't get extra food, but you do save money.

Remember, men are visual creatures, when they see it, they believe it!

Ryan, I've really enjoyed this post and the one about ROI. I just found this site and will continue to read it--not just coupon news, but some intellectual content, too! Your great support for your wife reminds me sadly of my now-ex husband, who had no idea how much money I saved for our family with my hard work and creativity--never an acknowledgement from him, let alone a compliment. Anyway, keep up the good work. Kate

As a hubbie who does support his wifes couponing I have to say one of the WORST parts about couponing is when there is a problem. I can swallow my pride while they ring up the $20 in coupons because whats left in the grocery budget at the end of a paycycle my wife gets to keep so it literally pays for her to be frugal. But I do hate waiting at a register for 3 mins when a single 'free' couon get scanned the clerk looks at the screen all confused, prints a reciept, looks for the item cant find it, has to check the already bagged items, enters the item price, register freaks out, has to call manager over etc. It is very much like they are trying to shame you into not using the coupons. It also angers me that my wife has to count her coupons so carefully. If she hands the clerk 15 coupons they should treat it as much like gold as they do $15. Instead they routinely don't pay attention and skip them. Those are frustrating moments, add to that that lots of men feel like a poor provider at times when their wife coupons and you could have some rough times at the register.

I really agree with #1. My hubby used to think couponing was silly and a waste of time. Now he sees all the special treats I buy for him...stuff that I would never usually buy but am getting free or nearly free because of coupons. Believe me, having snacks and treats in the house really showed my husband the value of coupons...and now he sees how much I'm saving on regular purchases too.
