You can't beat Ebay when it comes to used kids shoes. My daughter needed jazz shoes for her dance recital. They were $42 retail. I found some on Ebay for $10.

I understand where those of you who aren't comfortable with second-hand shoes are coming from. We're personally okay with it, so long as I'm very picky about what I buy second hand (new or only worn once or twice, good brands, high quality). And that's the beauty of thriftiness, isn't it? We use our money carefully so we can spend it on things we choose rather than the things we have to.

I try to be as thrifty as I can, but I'm not comfortable with used shoes. Especially on younger kids who's feet are still developing. With my 3.5 year old I've had good luck with buying Stride Rite on sale at the outlet store - play/tennis shoes come from there. Dressy shoes that he'll wear just a few times I'll buy a less expensive brand (and/or buy a half size too big so they'll last a bit longer). This way, we spend about $25 every time he needs new shoes. So far we've only had to buy him shoes 2-3x a year, so it has worked out well.

I tried to find second-hand shoes for our daughter, but the brands were unreliable ones and the shoes were such a mish-mash of trendy things that are meant to be worn with only certain outfits that I gave up.

We purchase, brand new, her shoes directly from Stride Rite. I spent probably 20 times the amount per year in shoes as you, but we only buy two pairs: a pair of sneakers and a pair of dress shoes.

It makes keeping up with them easy. The "old" pair is used at parks and such, the new pair is used for school and when we're out and about. It's definitely not as frugal a choice, but since finding quality second hand shoes was such a time waster for me, it is a lot easier.

When she gets a little older, I guess she'll be going to Payless or Target like we do for shoes.

I'm going to be shopping this weekend at the MOPS consignment sale and will be looking for my good sneakers for my son. This article was quite timely for me!

Don't forget about Goodwill. I don't know if they have one near you, but I was able to get my daughter and my son Stride Rite shoes there on their half-price day which meant I paid $1.50 for each pair. And they were in excellent condition. :)

Wow, nice haul for $6! I really hate when people in my area try to sell used kids' shoes for an arm and a leg. People seem to think VERY highly of their used goods around here. :)

Ryall- You bring up a great point about shoes taking the foot and walking pattern of the first owner. That's definitely something to be aware of! For this reason, I am very selective about the second-hand shoes I buy. Nearly all of the "everyday shoes" I buy second-hand have never been worn or have only been worn once or twice.

I am very thrifty, I think my son (age 3) has worn like 2 brand new articles of clothing. When he was younger I did a lot of secnd hand shoes, but now that he is older and I am concerned about 2nd hand shoes and their fit, shoes take the foot and walking pattern of the 1st owner. SO here is my money saving plan, Sunday shoes, and other not everyday shoes I buy second hand. But each season he gets 1 brand new pair of sneakers because he wears them everyday, it makes me feel better. I often buy these ahead on sale at a thrift store, or sometimes off Craigslist, but they are new. Payless has a stride rite brand now called smartfit, much more affordable. And there are Stride rite outlets too, great deals if you have one near you.
