Keeping with the spirit of the 30-Day Giving Challenge, I want to ask you to join me in the $10 Food Bank Challenge.
The $10 Food Bank Challenge is being hosted by Gina of Moneywise Moms. She shared with me this week that, according to the USDA, 1 in 7 families had trouble putting food on the table in 2008 while nearly 17 million U.S. children did not have enough food. With the U.S. unemployment rate the highest its been in over 25 years, I’m sure this statistic is even more heartbreaking this year than last.
Food banks have felt the strain as more people have needed food donations and less people have been able to give. To lend a hand in our communities, Gina is challenging families to take $10 from their grocery budgets this month and work a bit of coupon magic, donating the items to your local food bank, church, or school. With just $10 and some coupons, you can easily provide quite a bit of healthy food for families in need in your own community.
I took Gina up on the challenge this week, picking up some things here and there. Here’s what I am going to be giving to some folks at my church:
I’m hoping you will join me in the $10 Grocery Challenge as well. If you decide to participate, let Gina know on her Challenge post. (She has five prizes for random participants as an added bonus!) If you blog, she’s asking that you share what you purchased, along with information on the challenge, to your blog. Then leave the link to your post on hers. If you don’t blog, we still want you to join in! Just leave your $10 Grocery Challenge donation information in the comments.
Thanks, Gina, for hosting the $10 Grocery Challenge!

Thanks for linking up, Dana. I know you’ve heard the coupon nay-sayers complain that coupons are only for junk food, but look what you bought for just $10. Awesome!
I hope some of your readers will join us for the Challenge. Remember that I have 5 prizes to give away next week!

Exactly, Gina! I went out of my way (and didn’t save quite as much) to make sure I got some healthy items.
