$8 Glasses: Zenni Optical

by Mrs. Moneysaver on November 19, 2009

Okay, this post is nearly 8 months late getting to you.  Apparently I am more behind on my to-do list than I realized.  I ordered from Zenni back in the spring and have been wanting to share about them since.  If you or a family member wears eyeglasses, this could be a good company to keep in mind the next time you need new glasses.

I started wearing glasses as a teenager- ridiculously uncool ones that my husband still laughs about from time to time- but have worn contacts primarily for over 10 years.  I like to have a pair of glasses to wear though for those times when I don’t want to or can’t wear my contacts.  (Like pollen season when my eyes are so irritated!)  But the price of glasses- even with insurance- has just always seemed so unnecessarily high.

And then I found Zenni Optical.

Zenni offers glasses starting at just $8 and the prices run up to $19.  (Bi-focals and progressives are a bit more than that though.)  And anti-scratch protection is included for free.  Shipping is a flat-rate charge of $4.95, no matter how many pairs you order at once.

All you need to place your order is a current prescription from your eye doctor.  You just plug that prescription information in, along with an easy measurement of your face.  It’s an easy process.

When I ordered back in the spring, I splurged :) and bought a $9.95 pair.  With shipping, my total came to about $15.

Overall, I’m really happy with the Zenni glasses.  They’re good quality for what I want, and at those low prices, I can buy a new pair each year if my blind-as-a-bat prescription changes or I want a new style.  And the glasses fit surprisingly well, considering I wasn’t able to get them fitted in a store.

My only issue with the whole experience was that the glasses took just over a month to get to me- but not because of anything Zenni did.  The glasses ship from overseas, and my pair got caught up in Hong Kong customs for a few weeks.  Zenni was helpful in tracking them down in the whole process though, and eventually they did arrive here.

So the next time you need glasses, I suggest looking into Zenni as a money-saving option!

Zenni Optical did not ask me to or compensate me for the review above.  In fact, they have no idea I’m writing this.
