We are now over half way through the 30-Day Giving Challenge. How are you doing with the challenge?
Me? I’m doing okay, but not as well as I had hoped. While we’ve met the challenge most days, we haven’t been nearly as diligent writing everything down, so we’re lacking the complete record I had hoped to have. And one thing I’ve learned throughout the challenge? Unfortunately, when I’m sick, I’m incredibly me-focused. I spent a few days throughout this challenge sick with a bad cold. And on those days, I didn’t meet the challenge.
But the bottom line is this: This 30-Day Giving Challenge has been a great exercise in intentional generosity for our family so far. Since my children are so young, I had not focused much on intentionally teaching generosity daily. I just thought they were too young. While the newborn has proved to be too little to understand :) , my two year old has understood much more than I had previously given her credit for.
In case you missed my first post on the Challenge, it’s a challenge from Alyssa at Keeping the Kingdom First to give of yourself (time, money, something!) for each day throughout the month of November. You can read more about it here and here. And it’s not too late to join in!
Alyssa spent some time today sharing about the why of giving. What are our motives for giving? Because we feel guilty if we don’t? To get that feel-good feeling? So others will think we’re good or generous? Alyssa shares the following thoughts on why we should give:
“We give because it ultimately glorifies God. Because giving breaks the hold that money might otherwise have on us. While the Bible doesn’t specifically say so, it is evident that persons who give freely and generously are not controlled by money but have freedom.”
So true!
If you’ve been participating in the 30-Day Challenge or are just joining in now, I would love to hear how the first half of the challenge is going and/or your thoughts on the importantance of generosity.
