Today marks the first day of registration for the 2nd annual Grocery Challenge from All You magazine. The goal of the challenge is to spend$25 or less each week on groceries per person in your family for four weeks, June 20th-July17th. So if you’re a family of 4, your goal would be to spend $100 or less a week. (This is totally doable!) If you’ve been looking to lower your grocery bill, this might be a good time to dive in. And if you’ve been coupon shopping for awhile now, this is your chance to show off your skills.
The prize for this contest is big, so if cutting your grocery budget isn’t enough to motivate you, the $1,000 grocery gift card prize might just be the incentive that you need. Plus, the winner will be featured in an upcoming issue of All You magazine.
How fun would that be if one of you won?!
In order to join in, you need to register here for the Challenge by the end of the day on June 16th. Then, beginning June 18th, you’ll receive weekly emails with instructions on how to log your spending (so save your receipts), as well as weekly savings tips from me and some other bloggers. All the contestants will be whittled down to 10 finalists at the end of the contest, then a winner will determined based on the amount spent, creativity, and healthful food choices. Check out the contest FAQ page for more details.
To kick off the beginning of the Grocery Challenge, All You magazine wants to give one Mrs. Moneysaver reader a one-year subscription to All You magazine. You must be a U.S. resident to win.
You have four ways you can enter, and you can pick as many entries (up to four) as you would like. Make sure you leave a separate comment for each entry. If you are reading this post from an email, you must click over to the Mrs. Moneysaver site to leave your comments.

I think this is hilarious because I regularly feed both my husband and I on $20 a week TOTAL. It’s just what I have to do. I can’t take all the credit though – a lot of our produce is given to us.
We only eat out once a month (our monthly anniversary) and just don’t spend money we don’t have. Of course though I’m not allowed to say it, couponing doesn’t hurt a bit ;)
I signed up for the challenge.
When a recipe calls for something like 3 or 4 chicken breasts, I will usually only use 2 or 3. So it costs less money since I use less chicken, and it is healthier since we can’t have seconds! :)

I’m working on incorporating leftovers into meals. Yesterday’s leftover rice becomes part of tonight’s fajitas. Tonight’s leftover fruit gets made into smoothies tomorrow.
But I do use coupons! Mostly, all the extras in our cabinets come from triples & super doubles. If we run out of taco shells in that time, we probably just won’t have tacos! Flexibility helps us keep down the grocery bill.
I save money by calling the companies and complimenting them. I have gotten free product coupons and use them when the item is b1g1 for 2 free items!

I’ve cut expenses by buying most of our produce at Harris Teeter’s “For Today’s Consumption” Rack. Lots of the things are there are just fine if used within a few days.

This isn’t really creative but I cook. Store bought meals are pricey and not nearly as good or as good for you. I also participate in Freezer Cooking Day, so I’m not as tempted to order a pizza.

I save on the grocery bill with all the usual suspects:
-Coupons
-Stock Piling
-Bulk buying (at BJ’s so you can use coupons too)
-Using leftovers creatively
-etc
But my favorite way to save is by eating at a friends house. That way it’s zero out of pocket, plus you don’t have to cook! What can I say…that’s just how I roll. LOL!
I menu plan for my husband and I – BUT, I also make sure that our menu is suitable such that I buy a little extra to make my son’s baby food. So not only do we save money, but we ensure that all 3 of us eat healthy food!

I stockpile by matching store deals and coupons and by shopping when I know the stores mark their meat and produce down.
I shop at Sam’s and get large containers of peanut butter, sour cream, etc., that last me at least a month!

I use coupons when items are on sale to get the lowest price.
I make a monthly menu for our family, and a couple times a month I put “eat out”, that way we can look forward to it and not pick up fast food when we’re feeling lazy.
I like Mrs. Moneysaver on facebook.
I shop at Aldi’s for the things I don’t have coupons for, then head to Super Walmart with my high value coupons b/c their prices are generally cheaper…then I go to Wegman’s for meat. I usually save $25 for Harris Teeter b/c I always get the save $10 off $40 and $5 off $40…combined with their sales and coupons I can get A LOT there!
I’ve started making my own mixes and other things from scratch. My latest attempt was making homemade yogurt!

Besides using coupons, I am now rolling my Walgreen Register Rewards and Target gift cards to stretch my dollars. I’m also sending in every rebate offer I can and doing it when I return from shopping. Otherwise, you forget and lose out on free money!
Hi Dana
I subscribe. I save money on toothpaste and deoderant. I am still challenged to buy what we use and not just all those fun things on sale like drinks and chex mix. ( : And I am learning about the lowest price and watching out for sales then using my coupons. Thus all the low prices of cereal as they get stockpiled in my husband’s closet.

I cut my grocery spending by replacing commercial cleaners with less expensive ones. My favorites are white vinegar and baking soda….by themselves or in a combo…they do everything from soften your hands after cleaning to using in place of the expensive shampoo in a carpet steam vac (vinegar diluted in the vac works great at pulling the dirt out). Here is website for most of its uses http://www.vinegartips.com
I buy the 2 pk- 1 gallon bottles at Sams club for $3.38 once every 3-4 months.

I have dramatically cut my grocery spending since I started using coupons last summer. I went from spending $250+ a WEEK to less than $50 a week by not only using coupons, but NEVER paying full price for anything. I match sales with coupons and only buy things on sale. And I learned that brand names are not necessary!!
I do a little of everything- couponing, stockpiling, cooking extras and freezing, but most of all I try to educate the rest of my family about wise shopping and product usage. Thanks for all you do!
I have added more bean recipes to our meal plan and cut down on meat. I do this at least one or two days a week. This was really difficult since I think my husband could live off of chicken and rice almost every day!

I stockpile my grocery (and other non-food) items. I shop at the farmer’s market for my fruits and vegetables and save a ton of money that way!

While coupons are one way I save money grocery shopping, I find that making a meal plan based on the weekly sales help a lot. We also have some go-to “usuals” that we’ll stock up on ingredients for when they’re on sale (for example, spaghetti, tacos, etc). It helps to stock up when they’re cheap or nearly free than to pay full price when we decide to have those items!
I also subscribe to your blog via google reader!

I cut your grocery spending by buying items that are on sale and only get things I have a coupon for. A grocery store here has double coupon up to one dollar one week out of the month. I will get such awesome deals and stuff for free! I will stockpile all the items I get for dirt cheap. My pantry is always full.

I spend one day a week (usually Thursdays when the circulars come and I make a list of all the deals. Then I go onto the blogs and see what coupons/deals I have missed. Then I make a list of what we are going to eat that week. We really never buy anything (except milk and eggs) that aren’t on sale or with a coupon but usually both!

To cut costs on groceries, I’ve started looking for meals that I can make that we can eat off of for several meals and not just leftovers, but full different meals (like the rotisserie chicken plan)
