If you’ve been reading Mrs. Moneysaver for long, you may know that I buy most of my kids’ clothes second-hand. So when I was given the opportunity to review thredUP recently, I was thrilled. It sounded like something right up my alley.
thredUP in an online baby and kids clothing swap- and after giving it a try, I have to say it’s my new favorite way to buy second-hand. No waking up early for yard sales, or standing in long consignment lines. Just inexpensive clothes from the comfort of your home and the convenience of your computer.
To get started with thredUP, you’ll need an account. thredUP offers both a free membership and a paid “PRO” membership. The Pro membership, for $29.99, allows you to see more details on the clothes you’ll be receiving, along with other perks. After you have your account, the fun really starts.
Members list boxes (standard, medium size box for all swaps) on thredUP, with each box containing similar size and gender clothing. As the “buyer”, you can search to find boxes that fit your clothing needs. After selecting the box you want to receive, you pay just $13 for shipping, and your box will be on its way! I ordered a box of clothes for my son (using a shipping credit provided for the review), and was pleased when the box arrived in just a few days. But I was even more pleased about the contents of the box. I got 9 pieces of clothing in my box, including a coat, and everything was in excellent condition. For $13, that’s a steal!
Since thredUP is a swapping community, for each box that you receive, you have to list- or “build”- a box to give to someone else. I just listed a box last week, and I really found the process easy. First, thredUP showed me how to order (free) Priority Mail boxes from the US Postal Service, and those were delivered right to my door. Then, I filled a box with some gently-used baby clothes, and listed my box’s contents on thredUP. Now, I’m just waiting for someone to pick my box. Then I’ll be able to print a shipping label and send the box to the receiver- all free of charge for me.
And since I listed a box, I was then able to order a second box. I should be receiving a box of girls clothes this week. $13 shipping fee for 8 pieces of toddler clothing. Not too shabby!
While thredUP gave me the opportunity to try their swap for this review, it’s definitely something I plan to pay for in the future. Between the convenience, price, helpful seller ranking and reviews, and selection, it’s an easy and inexpensive way to buy second-hand.
Now, thredUP wants to give one of you the chance to try their swap!
The prize: 1 winner will receive a PRO membership to thredUP, as well as (2) $13 shipping credits. (Enough to order 2 boxes.)

Hey Dana, that was a great review. I also came to similar conclusions in my related blog post which you can find here:
