Homemade Gift Idea

by Mrs. Moneysaver on December 19, 2008

I’m pretty excited about how this homemade gift turned out, so I thought I would share it here. The cost was fairly minimal, and hopefully it will be a nice treat for the family it was made for! I haven’t put the finishing touches on yet… just a ribbon bow with a recipe card attached.

It’s a jar of butterscotch cookie mix. All the family will have to do is add the wet ingredients. If you’re interested in making one, here are the instructions.

First, get a large jar with a sealed lid. 2 quarts or so, maybe? Unfortunately, I’m not sure of the exact size, but make sure it’s large enough to fit all the ingredients listed below. I got my jar from Michael’s. The regular price was $6.99, but I was able to use a 40% off coupon, making the jar $4.

Next, gather the following ingredients. (I was able to just dip into my stockpile of baking supplies in order to lower the cost.)

4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 1/2 to 3 cups butterscotch chips

Mix together flour, salt, and baking soda well in bowl.

Using a funnel or rolled piece of paper, pour the flour mix into the bottom of clean jar. Pack flour down using ladle or turkey baster end. Next, layer the brown sugar on top of the flour. Pack tightly. Then layer the white sugar, followed by the butterscotch chips. Put lid on jar, and attach the following recipe card with a ribbon.

Butterscotch Cookies
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2. In a large bowl, cream 2 cups of unsalted butter or margarine until light and fluffy. Beat in 2 eggs and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Mix in cookie mix. Drop teaspoonfuls of dough, spaced well apart, onto a greased cookie sheet.
3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in preheated oven, or until lightly browned.
Cool on wire racks.

Voila! A delicious homemade gift!

Hey Dana! I have another gift in a jar idea if you are interested. It’s a yummy soup that is so good I make it all the time and freeze it. One jar of mix makes about 16 servings, plus it looks pretty all layered in the jar! :)
